Most manufacturers specify a full calibration every 12 months, with a bump test (functional gas check) before each use. For portable atmosphere-testing instruments carried under SOLAS Ch. XI-1 Reg. 7 for enclosed-space entry, IMO guidance in MSC.1/Circ.1477 directs owners to follow the manufacturer’s stated interval and to keep calibration records available on board. Tanker vetting regimes such as SIRE 2.0 and CDI will normally expect a valid certificate no older than 12 months. Your flag state or class may impose a shorter interval, so confirm against your vessel’s specific requirements.

Our engineers attend vessels alongside at Jurong Port, PSA terminals, Tuas, Sembawang and Keppel, as well as at Eastern OPL, Eastern Anchorage, Western Anchorage and the Raffles Reserved Anchorage, and at shipyards during dry-docking. Where an instrument cannot be calibrated accurately on board — or where a reference standard has to be applied under controlled conditions — we collect the unit, calibrate it at our facility in Singapore, and return it certified.

Our certificates state the instrument identification and serial number, the reference standards used and their traceability, the as-found and as-left readings, the ambient conditions, the date of calibration and the recommended next-due date, and are issued by a technician competent for that equipment type. Forty-eight hours’ notice is comfortable for a standard scope and same-day or next-day attendance is often possible for vessels already in port limits. A typical portable gas detector fleet of six to ten units takes two to three hours. A 15 ppm bilge alarm or ODME calibration usually runs half a day, longer if the unit needs cleaning or sensor replacement first. Combining several jobs into one attendance is significantly cheaper than separate visits, so send the full list of instruments due within the next three months rather than only the ones expired today.
